Let’s Get Serious About Obesity, Part 1

by Diabetes, For Men, For Women

I realize that I am taking a serious risk by addressing a subject that African American women do not want to hear.  It’s okay, because I have been doing this for years, trying to save lives.

It is well documented that many African American women think that it is acceptable to be obese because it is associated with our “cultural heritage.” Today, over one fourth of African American women are obese and the number is increasing among young women.  The medical profession has deemed obesity a serious problem that will take its toll on the health of women during their early and late lifespan.  Obesity is a horrific, health epidemic in our community.

My opinion and the opinions of other health professionals, who have our best interest at heart, is a major effort will be needed to teach our community about obesity being a disease and not connected to our “cultural heritage.”

Obesity decreases the quality and duration of life.

Your opinion matters.
